Recirculating Filter Fume Hoods (Ductless)
Captair ... Number 1 for 30 years!

Molecular Filtration System for Chemical Fume Containment

Capture Velocity: Captair fume hoods comply with AS 2243.9. An integral fan ensures full containment velocity of 0.5m/sec with the sash lowered. The total airflow is carefully balanced to optimise both filter contact time, and total filter life.

Prefilter: Air is drawn in through the fume chamber, and passes first through a non-woven synthetic fabric. This prefilter removes coarse particles which could block micropores in the chemical filter, and reduce its life.

Dust & Aerosols: For fumes containing fine particulates, there are two optional filters available. The standard particle filter comprises increasingly fine layers of non-woven synthetic fabric, and is 95% efficient at 0.5 micron (EU9). The HEPA filter uses a pleated media to achieve 99.99% arrestance at 0.3 micron (EU13).

Chemical Filters

Chemical filters: There are two general purpose chemical filters available. Both utilise activated microporous bone charcoal to provide maximum surface area, and superb weight-for-weight retention capacity. The electron micrograph clearly shows the extended porous surface structure.

  • The AS filter is optimised for organic use, with some acid capacity.

  • The BE filter is still good with solvents, and has enhanced capacity for acids.

  • There are also chemical-specific filters for ammonia, formaldehyde, and iodine isotopes.
Filter combinations: Filters may be combined to broaden the chemical protection. It is common to pair particle and chemical filters. Different chemical filters may also be paired. For example, Type AS + Type F filters will contain formaldehyde and solvent fumes, as in Histology work.

Discharge: The 99.99% clean filtered air is discharged from the top of the hood. No ducting is required. There is no loss of heat through an exhaust duct system. This saving may well offset the cost of replacement filters.

Environmental protection: Absorption of fumes in a chemical filter prevents the release of contaminants into the atmosphere, and encapsulates them for responsible disposal. New filters are supplied in a sturdy polythene bag, which is useful to wrap up the used filters. Filter disposal should recognise the nature of chemical exposure. Some compounds are safe for dumping in landfill. Alternatively, the filter media provides excellent fuel to assist high temperature incineration. In any doubt, the used filter should be sent to a specialist disposal facility.

Filter life: Your Captair agent can provide specific filter capacity information for a wide range of chemicals. Your work program can be assessed for projected chemical exposure, to estimate filter life, and operating cost. Remember to include the saving in heated or cooled air.

In general use, filters should last a year. The actual on-site chemical exposure must be recorded, to assist in predicting future filter replacement cycles.

Advantages: There is no installation. The Captair hood is a freestanding plug-in appliance.

  • Portable - Captair hoods may be easily relocated to suit laboratory organisation
  • Flexible - Changing the filter type adapts your Captair hood for different work
  • Mobile - Captair hoods may be mounted on a trolley for mobility
Limitations: Some chemical exposures may be too toxic, or difficult to filter, or simply too much volume for filtration. Then ducted fume cabinets are recommended.
